deborahknowles Would convents/nunneries have had 'lay brothers' or 'lay sisters' or neither? I know they had male priests.

Maria The convents had male priests because women weren't allowed to listen to confesions or perform the liturgy.
Lay sisters yes, lay brothers...no, I don't think so.

But I can tell you about some convents in nowadays Romania. In remote rural areas there are no lay sisters, everybody gets to do the hard work in turns.
